Except for limited certificates of admission, foreign legal consultants, and pro hac vice admissions, applicants seeking admission to practice law in South Carolina must comply with the requirements set forth in Rule 402 of the South Carolina Appellate Court Rules (SCACR). Only persons who have received a JD or LLB degree from a law school which was approved by the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the American Bar Association at the time the degree was conferred are eligible for admission under this rule. Please consult the rule for other requirements.
Applications to Take the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) in South Carolina
The UBE is composed of the Multistate Performance Test (MPT), Multistate Essay Examination (MEE), and the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) which are prepared by and administered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). The UBE is graded in accordance with the standards established by the NCBE. The UBE will be administered in South Carolina twice a year on the last consecutive Tuesday and Wednesday in February and July. A scaled score of 266 on the UBE is required for admission in South Carolina. Additional information regarding the content of the UBE is available at www.ncbex.org.

Beginning August 1, 2025, applicants applying to sit for the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) in South Carolina must apply via the online application portal (Application Portal). To complete an Application for Admission, the applicant must create an account. Once an applicant has created an account, the applicant can log on and open the current application. Forms, relevant documents and webpages are available for purposes of reviewing the questions on the application and collecting the required documents.
